Question: Microwave oven generating smoke?

I mistakenly overcooked some frozen food in my microwave. It started generating smoke. I disconnected the microwave immediately and opened the windows to refresh the air in the apartment. When the smoke went away, I opened the door and found it was all ash.. My question is, is it normal for microwaves to leak smoke when something like this happens? Thanks... Thanks for the replies ~BabyGirl~ and Bob. Please forgive my ignorance, but if microwaves have vents, is that not an escape route for microwave radiation?
