Question: Kitchenaid dishwasher, loud noise and the door now falls down, gear piece flew out, easy to repair?

On Thanksgiving Day, of course, my three year old kitchenaid , which has been squeaking for a while, made a loud noise and now the door falls completely open. Should I hire someone to fix it, or is it an easy repair? |

This may be an easy repair. With the KitchenAid dishwashers, the cable for the door spring can break and replacement is easy. The part that may be difficult is disconnecting the water, drain hose and electricity in order to pull the dishwasher forward to get to the door cable. This part number 8194001 may be the one you need. |

Hmm, might be two things wrong, door fell open, and gear threw out, call the tool frre # on back of instrutions first, then try to fix yourself, then if needed call in help!! |

I've had this problem more than once in over 40 years. In each of my cases, the problem turned out to be a broken SPRING [there are two, one on each side] which counteracts the weight of the door. In your case, without "hands on " troubleshooting, no one can tell you whether a spring is broken, or two springs are broken, or just have slipped off of the attachment pins, or whether or not one of the attachment pins are broken. The "fix " depends on what is disconnected or broken. If you are mechanically inclined, the repair is not too difficult, but is time consuming. If you have long, thin fingers the job is easier, and if short, fat, stubby fingers the job is a bear. The bottom front panel below the door has to be removed, and the door front panel removed to get to the springs and their mounting points. On my machines, the edge trim panels had to be removed to remove the door front panel. If you're lucky your owner's manual will have an "exploded " diagram which helps to figure out where all the screws and/ or fasteners will be found. |
