Does anyone have any ideas for a dining room floor instead of wood?

Question: Does anyone have any ideas for a dining room floor instead of wood?

Is my only other option ceramic tile? I don't want a wood floor (or laminate that looks like wood) in my dining room because I have that in the rest of my house. But I would like it to look "country " or at least "traditional ". Any input is appreciated!

Both your country and traditional look can be done with the two main choices left, ceramic ( or a form of it such as stones and porcelains) and vinyls. There is always carpet in a formal, seldom used dining room but not a practical flooring for every day use. I m a fan of ceramics for practicality and looks because so much can be accomplished with it. Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. GL

How about slate or a Terra Cotta tile?

If you want to be really traditional, in the 'old days' when floors got tired, they were painted! You can paint a main design onto the floor, under the table or around the edges or just take a bright colour and use that. Another alternative is to use stains. They come in all colours now (not just wood) and you can separate the colours is you want to make a design on the floor. Stain is permanent though so you would have to be sure of what you're doing.

How about rubber flooring it is quiet, warm and you can choose a neutral colour. then put spot lights on it changing the colours like a mood room etc.

Since you do not want wood or wood look, I think the only options are tile or carpet. Tile being more difficult to install and more expensive than carpeting. Carpet is quite acceptable for a dining room. You could even go with a patterned carpet. Since it is just one room being carpeted, it would not cost alot to change to another type of flooring in the future. Here is one example...many to choose from. shawfloors.com/ carpetDetails/ Commercial/ Pattern/ Capstone-Smokerise

Cork is all the rage! Personally, I used to find it hard to believe that they could produce flooring from such a lightweight substance, but they must have a way to make it practical for such uses, because the designers use it frequently and the pictures I have seen of cork floors are quite handsome. Bamboo is another product in use nowadays, it is cheap, durable and can be renewed easily. Concrete floors are being produced with lots of faux looks; it is being stained in patterns, molded to look like tile, finished to a beautiful shiny colored floor, it's just amazine. Concrete would also be a permanent flooring; finding someone to finish it properly would be the only setback.
